MEASURES
Our main measures so far:
• All programmes of the European Forum Alpbach 2009 have been printed on paper certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC).
• The European Forum Alpbach offices in Vienna and Alpbach use recycling paper only. This also pertains to all A4-size programmes in your conference folders and to Alpbach News.
• In order to avoid waste paper, we have decided not to print the “who-is-who” containing the CVs of all speakers, but to provide it online only. This helps us cut our total paper consumption during the conference by 43% compared to 2008.
• For the first time this year, a direct shuttle bus service between Wörgl and Alpbach has been put into place in order to encourage participants to use public transport rather than the car.
• In addition, the regional bus schedule in and around Alpbach has been extended into the evenings to encourage participants to use public transport for travel between the Congress Centre and their accommodation.
• We have actively encouraged our speakers and participants to travel by train or, if travelling by plane, to make use of the available carbon offsetting programmes.
• We are using highly fuel-efficient cars for our speaker transfers.
• All catering provided as part of the official programme of the European Forum Alpbach conforms to the highest standards of sustainability. 90% percent of ingredients come from regional, fair trade or organic producers.
• Measures to reduce energy consumption in the Alpbach Congress Centre including energy-efficient lightning, energy-efficient IT infrastructure, energy monitoring and a research program to optimize the air condition and heating system.
