We mourn the loss of Claus J. Raidl (1942 - 2024).

Claus J. Raidl, born on 6 November 1942 in Kapfenberg, Styria, passed away on 10 December 2024 at the age of 82 after a prolonged illness. As an outstanding Austrian manager, visionary thinker, and long-serving Vice President of the European Forum Alpbach (EFA), he significantly influenced Austria's industrial and economic policy for decades.

“Claus Raidl was a great European who always prioritised European needs over national sensitivities. He had visions for the future of our continent, demonstrated courage and foresight, and proved that he could successfully implement them. With Claus Raidl, I lose a friend and loyal supporter, and Austria loses one of its brightest minds,” said Othmar Karas, President of the European Forum Alpbach, in praise of Raidl’s exceptional contributions.

Franz Fischler, EFA Honorary President and a long-time companion of Claus Raidl, emphasised: “With Claus Raidl, we lose a remarkable personality with foresight who shaped not only the European Forum Alpbach with his commitment but also set benchmarks in many other areas. It was a privilege to work alongside him for many years, building and developing the Forum. His conviction, his dedication to dialogue, and his commitment to Europe will never be forgotten. My deepest condolences go to his family, who always played a central role in his life.”

Vice President of the European Forum Alpbach

As Vice President of the European Forum Alpbach, a role he held until 2020, Claus Raidl left a unique mark on the Forum. The economic and financial market discussions bore his distinctive influence. Under his leadership, these formats were significantly expanded—introducing Partner Sessions at the financial market talks, strengthening international partnerships, and increasing the global diversity of speakers. With his focus on innovative formats and global perspectives, he transformed these discussions into vital platforms for interdisciplinary and intergenerational exchange.

Raidl was not only a strategic thinker and articulate debater. All those who worked with him at the EFA between 2012 and 2020 remember his charismatic personality, humorous anecdotes, and his impressive ability to delve deeply into complex topics while effortlessly fostering social connections. He brought people together, was engaging and witty, yet always focused and determined.

For many colleagues and companions, he was not just a manager but a person who shared personal moments. His role as a father, occasionally evident in Alpbach, highlighted his versatility and human depth.

A Bridge Builder Between Science, Business, and Society

In addition to his primary responsibilities for the economic and financial market discussions, Raidl was deeply committed to fostering dialogue between science and business. As a member of the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB), he actively promoted interdisciplinary exchange and embodied the “Spirit of Alpbach”—the connection of people, ideas, and perspectives to address the pressing issues of our time.

A Lasting Legacy

Claus Raidl leaves behind not only his wife and three sons but also an impressive legacy that extends far beyond Austria’s borders. His life and work were defined by extraordinary commitment, vision, and a profound dedication to the values of the European Forum Alpbach.

We mourn Claus J. Raidl, a visionary thinker, passionate bridge builder, and dedicated leader. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family during this difficult time. His spirit will live on in the European Forum Alpbach, and his contributions to nurturing young talents, interdisciplinary collaboration, and intergenerational dialogue will continue to inspire us all.
