He is head of the European Space Agency's (ESA) Earth observation satellite missions at the European Space Research Institute (ESRIN) in Rome. Hanowski earned his doctorate in earth and planetary sciences and began working as a researcher in the USA. In 1999, he moved to mission operations at the German Space Operations Centre at DLR. In 2009, he joined ESA and became responsible for the development of scientific ground segments for missions such as Rosetta, Gaia, James Webb Space Telescope, Solar Orbiter and Euclid in the Science Directorate. Since 2014, he has been responsible for the operations and ground segments of ESA's Earth observation missions and Copernicus Sentinel satellites as well as the corresponding data management aspects at ESA.
