He is Professor and Head of the Institute for Philosophy and Philosophy of Science at the Johannes Kepler University Linz. He studied economics and finance at the University of St. Gallen, later completed a doctorate in philosophy of science at the London School of Economics and has worked at Columbia University, Erasmus University Rotterdam and the University of Durham, among others. His research focuses on methods of science (especially causality and scientific reasoning, models, simulations and thought experiments), philosophy of economics and the role of science in society. He was elected a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in 2022 and Chairman of the Philosophy of Science section in 2023.
