Sustainability

For the European Forum Alpbach (EFA), sustainability is a core element of its mission to actively shape societal change. Building on its previous efforts, the EFA aims to further develop its sustainability strategy to maximize positive ecological and social effects, and to carry on the thematic contents of the EFA to ensure lasting impact.

About

The European Forum Alpbach brings together thousands of people to discuss, and collaboratively work on solutions for a strong, democratic Europe. However, wherever many people gather, environmental impacts increase: emissions, waste, higher energy consumption, and much more. These are the challenges we face as an event. In light of the ongoing climate crisis, we aim to make our event more sustainable and environmentally friendly year after year. Therefore, we have integrated sustainability into both our strategic and operational planning, and are actively working on our holistic concept, “EFA365”, to also strengthen the thematic sustainability of our forum.

However, much depends on those who participate and contribute – together, let’s make the EFA a place where sustainability is both lived and practiced!

Green Meeting

The European Forum Alpbach is proud to commit to the guidelines of the Austrian Ecolabel and to be considered a "Green Meeting" or "Green Event". Under the label “Green Meeting”, the EFA saves resources and acts in an environmentally conscious manner in all operational areas since 2010. Amongst other measurements, this includes using public transport to avoid individual transport or reducing printed brochures.

Therefore, we also invite our partners to contribute to this in their Partner Sessions, Side Events, and in their public appearance. More about our requirements and desirable measurements for our partners on this site.

Mobility

As an event with contributors from all over the world, mobility is a key aspect of our sustainability strategy. To keep emissions from travel as low as possible on our side, over 90% of our transfers are already handled using hybrid or fully electric vehicles.

For our participants, we are working closely with ÖBB this year to increase the number of sustainable arrivals. To make travel not only comfortable and sustainable, but also more affordable, discounted train tickets can be purchased through our congress account. All information can be found on the service page.

Last year, approximately 49% of our participants indicated that they traveled to the European Forum Alpbach using public transportation. The full details are available soon in the mobility report in the download section.

The EFA covers the cost of the Klimaticket for its organising team, so that nearly the entire team travels to the event using public transportation. On-site, E-bikes are available for our staff throughout the entire forum.

Catering

Sustainability is also important to us when it comes to catering. With over 130 catering events during the forum, the demand for sustainable alternatives is significant. We continue to work on reducing the carbon footprint of our catering, which is why all EFA events are vegan/vegetarian. We also pay close attention to the regional origin of the food at the forum. To achieve this, we work closely with local businesses to offer healthy, and delicious menus.
